Canine NT-proBNP levels:
what should you check if they are high?
Elevated NT-proBNP may indicate increased cardiac strain. The result alone does not establish a diagnosis or determine medication. Auscultation, kidney function, chest radiographs and echocardiography help assess the cause and need for treatment.

Blood markers and ultrasound assess different things
NT-proBNP is a cardiac biomarker that can rise when heart muscle is stretched or under pressure. Its blood concentration helps assess cardiac strain.
Echocardiography examines heart structure, size and blood flow. NT-proBNP and echocardiography therefore do not replace one another. Coughing, breathlessness or a murmur calls for tests selected alongside current symptoms and examination findings.
Read the reference ranges together with their limitations
The following canine ranges are from Vcheck Canine NT-proBNP. First check the method, units and reference interval on your report. Cats have different interpretation criteria; these ranges do not apply to them.
| Result | Interpretation | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Below 900 pmol/L | Within the manufacturer's normal range. | Early or mild structural heart disease may not be detected by this value alone. Symptoms, murmurs and risk factors guide the need for further tests. |
| 900~1,800 pmol/L | A range that warrants checking for possible heart disease. | Further assessment may include auscultation, chest radiographs and echocardiography. |
| Above 1,800 pmol/L | A higher likelihood of heart disease warrants further assessment. | The value alone does not determine disease stage or treatment; findings and current condition are considered together. |

Reduced kidney function can raise NT-proBNP, so kidney indicators should also be reviewed. When comparing previous values, check the test date and method to interpret changes meaningfully.
One number does not determine whether to start medication
Ultrasound and radiographs help establish whether the heart is enlarged and what structural changes are present. Treatment follows the disease stage and current condition. A high value alone does not justify starting heart medication or changing a dose.
Conversely, a low value should not delay indicated echocardiography when a murmur or suspected heart disease is present. Ask your veterinarian why the test was performed and how its result affects the next tests and treatment plan.

Bring the report and previous records
Along with the value, a report lists the date, units, method and reference interval. Previous blood tests, ultrasound and radiograph results, plus current medication details, help place the new result in context.
Fasting and medication instructions depend on the tests planned. Follow the clinic's instructions and do not stop regular medication on your own.
